As we move through each day and night our precious brains are moving through different wave states, most commonly Beta, Alpha, Theta and Delta, although there are also Gamma and, the little known about- Infra- Low, these brain wave states operate at different frequencies. When these wave states become unstable, such as through under-arousal, over-arousal or a combination of both we can experience many difficulties. These may manifest in the following ways:
Beta Waves: 12 - 38 Hz These dominate the normal waking state and consciousness. They are active when involved in cognitive tasks and dealing with the outside world. They apply to fast activity, are present when alert, attentive, undertaking problem solving, judgement, decision making and focused mental activity. They can be further broken down into 3 bands: Lo - fast idle, musing. Beta - High engagement, actively figuring something out. Hi - Highly complex thought, integrating new experiences, high anxiety or excitement.
Alpha Waves: 8 - 12 Hz These are dominant during quietly flowing thoughts, they are active in some meditative states and they represent the "Power of Now", being here, in the present moment and they are the resting state for the brain. Alpha waves aid overall mental coordination, calmness, alertness, mind/body integration and learning.
Theta Waves: 3 - 8 Hz These occur most often in sleep, also in deep meditation, they are the gateway to learning, memory and intuition. During this state our senses are withdrawn from the external world and focused on signals from within. This is the twilight state normally experienced briefly as we wake or drift off to sleep. In Theta state we are in a dream, we experience vivid imagery, intuition and information beyond normal conscious awareness. This is where we hold our "stuff", fears, troubles and nightmares.
Delta Waves: 5 - 3 Hz These waves are slow and loud. They have a low frequency and are deeply penetrating, like a drum beat. They are generated in the deepest meditation and dreamless sleep. Delta waves suspend external awareness and are our source of empathy. Healing and regeneration are stimulated in this state
Gamma Waves: 38 - 42 Hz These are the fastest brain waves, operating at a high frequency and are subtle. Simultaneous processing of information occurs from different brain areas and in this state information passes rapidly and quietly. It is above the frequency of neuronal firing. Is highly active when we are in states of universal love, altruism and higher virtues.
